King David’s Example

Gwen Shamblin Lara -God-Fearing Families Book

How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to your word. I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands. I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. Praise be to you, O LORD; teach me your decrees. With my lips I recount all the laws that come from your mouth. I rejoice in following your statutes as one rejoices in great riches. I meditate on your precepts and consider your ways. I delight in your decrees; I will not neglect your word. Psalm 119:9-16

King David wrote this Psalm, and it is one of my all-time favorite passages for guiding children and our own hearts. King David is an example of someone who sought God. In fact, this Psalm says he sought God with all of his heart. As a young man, King David did not have a lot of recreation and entertainment equipment. He was out by himself in a field with sheep that could not talk to him. He was in God’s Word every day and memorizing Scripture. Every day, he sought God as he was tending the sheep, taking them to green pastures, and protecting them from wolves and bears. From his experience shepherding animals, he became one of the best shepherds of men who has ever lived, next to Jesus Christ, because he shepherded the people to a love for God.
